DSA Students, Parents and Community Members,
DSA students, in partnership with school staff members and administration have been discussing ways to discourage students from participating in the planned national walk-out on Friday, April 20, 2018. Because of the anticipated activities associated with 4-20 the DSA Administration will not be supporting a student walk-out on this particular day. There are too many risks for our students on this particular day.
We are committed to keeping you updated on issues that involve school safety and that support our students voices in this movement. In meeting with student leaders as a follow-up to the walk-out on March 14th, we are organizing a political engagement session on April 20, the anniversary of the Columbine shooting. These activities are being planned by the DSA Discourse Club. Sessions will take place at the rotunda before school and during middle and high school lunch. The focus will be to educate others interested in the gun control debate. We will include information about school shootings, gun control legislation, the Colorado General Assembly, contacting your elected officials, and registering to vote online. The event is called More Than A March.
Again, I encourage you to have these conversations with your student related to how they are processing these issues and how they will approach the choices that may be made on Friday, April 20, 2018. Please support us in encouraging them to not participate in any walk-out activities. As always, I encourage you to contact any DSA staff member for discussion and to ask questions.
