Auditions -- 2008-2009 School Year

There are three significant components to the audition for the Piano Department:

1.  Students will perform two pieces of contrasting style from memory.  As per copyright laws, students must bring an ORIGINAL copy of their music to their audition.  (90%)

2. Middle School (MS) students will be required to perform one major scale and the three forms of the relative minor scale in the key of one of the pieces they are performing, two octaves at moderate tempo. High School (HS) students will be required to perform one major and the three forms of the minor scale in the key of one of the pieces they are performing, four octaves each, in sixteenth notes at approximately 120-144 beats per minute.  For example, if your piece is in the key of C Major, you will be required to perform the C Major scale, the A harmonic minor scale, the A melodic minor scale, and the A natural minor scale. (8%)

3. Students will be asked to participate in a short interview, during which we may discuss the student's history and a resume of recent musical activities, recitals, etc.  We appreciate a portfolio of student work, but it is not a significant factor in the audition.  Please do not include report cards from your elementary or middle schools.  DSA, as a magnet arts school, accepts students solely based on their perceived artistic talent.  (2%)

DSA encourages anyone who feels qualified to audition. However, please note that the piano program at DSA is not a beginner's program, and that students who are accepted at the MS level are generally capable of performing repertoire that includes Bach Two-Part Inventions and Clementi Sonatinas. HS students who are accepted into the program have generally attained the level of repertoire that includes Preludes and Fugues from Bach's The Well-Tempered Clavier, Mozart and Beethoven Sonatas, Mendelssohn's Songs Without Words, or similar advanced literature.

The adjudication sheet for the piano department is the instrument that will be used to assess the students' musical qualifications for our program. To access that sheet, please use the link below:
