Many parents and students have asked about how to best accomplish the homework goals for IMP. Here are a few suggestions:
1.
We use a block schedule. As a result, students will have 2 homework
assignments for each block. They should try to complete one assignment
each night. Students should spend a maximum of 25 minutes per
night on homework. (If they are spending more time than that and
struggling, they should see me for tutoring.)
2. Students should
attempt every problem on an assignment. If you are not sure what to do,
try the method that seems most reasonable and/or write deailed questions about your concerns.
3. To complete POW's effectively, students will need to budget their time wisely. a. Always read the POW the first night and jot down some preliminary ideas. b.
DON'T WAIT until the night before a POW is due to begin your work.
Spend 5 - 15 minutes each night working on the POW. (As students become
more familiar with POW's, they will develop a sense of how long a POW
takes to complete and how they best work on longer problems. At this
point, students may wish to buget their time by spending a half hour
one or two nights rather than a few minutes every night working on the
POW.) c. If you are working consistently and reach a block,
stop. Take a break. Then, either begin again with a fresh mind or get
help through tutoring or another resource.
4. Parents, you can help your student by asking him or her to explain - what the problem is asking them to do - what they already know about the problem
- what they learned in class recently that might help them (All
students should be keeping complete notes from class activities.) - how they could use the above information to try to solve the problem and - their reasoning.
(If you would like more help, please contact me for a handout with more questions along these lines.)
