Music Theory, Unit I
After successfully completing this unit, the student will
Define "functional harmony"
Define "period of common practice"
Create and use the circle of fifths as it applies to standard and theoretical key signatures.
Construct and recognize all key signatures, including theoretical key signatures.
Recognize, write, and perform scales and modes beginning with any pitch in treble, bass, alto, and tenor clefs.
Recognize and use scale degree designations, such as "tonic, supertonic, etc."
Recognize and perform whole tone, pentatonic, octatonic, and other symmetrical scales.
Music Theory, Unit II
After successfully completing this unit, the student will
Recognize, both aurally and visually, and use major, minor, augmented, and diminished intervals.
Recognize consonant and dissonant intervals and how they are used in music of the common practice period.
Recognize, both aurally and visually, triad quality at each scale degree, i.e. tonic, supertonic, etc.
Understand, recognize, and cite transpositions of transposing woodwind and brass instruments.
Music Theory, Unit III
After successfully completing this unit, the student will
Understand and use time signatures, both duple and triple, and simple and complex.
Recognize assymmetrical time signatures.
Understand note values and rests.
Understand dotted and doubly and triply dotted rhythms.
Music Theory, Unit IV
After successfully completing this unit, the student will
Gain an elementary understanding of figured bass and will apply it to harmonic analysis.
Recognize, both visually and aurally, and use chords in root position, and first, second, and third inversions (seventh chords).
Music Theory, Unit V
After successfully completing this unit, the student will
Review part-writing rules
Recognize, both aurally and visually, and use Authentic, Plagal, Phrygian, and Half Cadences and be able to write them in four-part format.
Understand and recognize parallel fifths and octaves, improper voice leading, improper spacing of voices, and open and closed positions.
