Every attempt will be made to help a student succeed in the Piano Department. Grades are based on several factors, with the largest percentage of grading weight on performances and juries. Criteria may vary, but grades are generally based on the following:
Jury -- 200 points (HS and MS) Journal/Notebook -- 50 points (MS only) Quizzes -- points as determined (MS and HS)* Participation/Attendance -- 100 points (MS and HS)
Student presentation -- 100 points per semester (HS and MS)
Final Paper -- 100 points (HS only)
Classroom Performances -- 30 points per performance (HS and MS)
Other classroom work -- points as determined (HS and MS)
Extra credit may be earned through participation in DSA programs, which can include accompanying, attendance at DSA performances, or other approved activities.
In most cases, late work will be accepted and will be scored at 50% of the original value of the assignment. Students are encouraged to complete all work.
*Department policy regarding quiz scores for both HS and MS classes is as follows: Any student receiving less than 80% on a quiz will be required to retake that quiz until he/she earns an 80% or better. Quizzes will be retaken under the supervision of Mr. Shaw AFTER SCHOOL. Students must make arrangements at Mr. Shaw's convenience to retake quizzes.
Please also review Rules for the Piano Room and Piano Attendance Policy for other classroom policies, some of which can affect a student's grade.
