Students at the MS level will be participation in various activites that include Music Theory, Music History, and Guided Performance.
Group 1 Theory students will work twice a week in their theory textbook-workbook, "Alfred's Music Theory". Special emphasis this quarter is on intervals.
Group 2 Theory students will work twice a week in their Theory textbook-workbook, "Theory Time". Special emphasis is paid to key signatues, scales, and chord function.
All students will study Impressionism this quarter, with special emphasis on the compositions and compostional techniques of Debussy, Ravel, and Griffes. References to poetry, literature, and visual art. Discussion of the pentatonic scale, whole-tone scale, octatonic scale and planing (parallelism). References to neoclassicism, the Russian Revolution, Diaghelev, and World War I.
Thursdays and Fridays are devoted to Guided Practice. Students will practice independently in a supervised situation. It is at this time that students will be preparing for their recitals and other performances.
Independent Projects: Students will each be responsible for a 10-minute presentation about an aspect of music they find interesting. Each presentation will contain a visual piece, an aural piece, and some sort of activity piece or study guide. Students will take a quiz about their topic, and this will serve as their semester final.
