GEOGRAPHY  All Assignment descriptions will be posted in the grade section of  the parent portal in IC. This year long geography class is REQUIRED for graduation. A Geography course in the Denver Public Schools is not hindered by the "World" label. Students are expected to understand concepts of geography as they apply at any scale, global or local. Therefore, these concepts, suggested by the district's standards are to be explored at a variety of scales and should be seen in context from local Denver examples to worldwide examples. Students will study selected regions to apply global themes and patterns of physical, cultural, political,  and economic trends to better understand current international issues. Students will explore the five themes of geography on a variety of scales to interpret the human inprint on the earth and measure change both locally and globally. Case studies will include current issues and an emphasis on cross-cultural appreciation. This class will: Review and reinforce the students knowledge and appreciation of geographic concepts. Study the impact of: climate upon the world's surface, climate upon human culture, human activity upon the earth's climate and landforms, the role world religions play in world events, governmental and economic systems. We will also examine the various regions of the world related to current event issues.

Texts and primary Resources:  Geography Alive Regions and People, World Geography Building A Global Perspective, and other materials to be determined.

Absences: Please review attendance policies in the student planner or school web site. Due to the nature of the program, it is helpful for the student to be in attendance in each class everyday. Please try to schedule other activities outside the school calendar.

Homework and Independent Reading / Projects: Students will be assigned a variety of in and out of class assignments. Each student will complete a research project. It is expected that students will be responsible to turn in all assignments when due. The students will be encouraged to “ contract” projects with me that will integrate their particular unique talents, interests, skills and abilities into our study of geography. Criteria will be developed as we explore the possibilities.

Assessments: Quizzes, semester exams and finals. Indivdual and group projects and presentations. Homework and class pariicipation.

Grading: Grades will earned as a percentage of points possible, the honors grade conversions will be the traditional 90 - 100 A, 80 - 89 B, 70 - 79 C, 60 - 69 D, 59 and below = F. Grades will show a +/- modifier.  Points will be earned for quality of work on all assignments, tests, quizzes, and class participation. It is the student’s responsibility to contact me prior to the due date of an assignment if there is a serious reason that their work will be late. Late work will be accepted, but at a reduced percentage.

2. Students know the physical and human characteristics of places, and use this knowledge to define and study regions and their patterns of change.
3. Students understand how physical processes shape Earth's surface patterns and systems.
4. Students understand how economic, political, cultural, and social processes interact to shape patterns of human populations, interdependence, cooperation, and conflict.
5. Students understand the effects of interactions between human and physical systems and the changes in meaning, use, distribution, and importance of resources.
6. Students apply knowledge of people, places, and environments to understand the past and present and to plan for the future.
