MS Syllabus, Second Quarter, 2005

  Study this quarter will continue our discussion of the conservative Romantic composers. We will spend Mondays discussing theory concepts, continuing our discussion of intervals and scales and modes. Students can plan on at least 45 minutes per day of direct teaching and can plan the remainder of the time for independent practice. We will continue to feature student presentations on Fridays and will offer ample opportunities for students to perform for the class. We will also be learning all major and minor scales this quarter.

Weeks 1, 2, and 3

The Life and Music of Johannes Brahms.

Brief biography of Brahms, and his relationship to the Schumanns, early compositions, concertos, and symphonic writing. Shorter piano works will be discussed. Theoretical concepts, sonata form as used by Romantic composers.

Weeks 4, 5, and 6

The Life and Music of Felix Mendelssohn

Brief biography of Mendelssohn and his relationship to the other Romantic composers. Songs without Words, First Piano Concerto, The Hebrides, early string symphonies, Violin Concerto.

Weeks 7 and 8

Final preparation for juries and recitals.
