Study this quarter will continue our discussion of the radical
Romantic composers. We will spend Mondays discussing theory concepts,
continuing our discussion of intervals and scales and modes. Students
can plan on at least 45 minutes per day of direct teaching and can plan
the remainder of the time for independent practice. We will continue to
feature student presentations on Fridays and will offer ample
opportunities for students to perform for the class. We will also be
continuing to learn all major and minor scales this quarter.
Weeks 1, 2, and 3
The Life and Music of Franz Liszt.
Brief
biography of Liszt, his relationship to the Conservative Romantics, early
compositions, concertos, and symphonic writing. Shorter piano works
will be discussed. Theoretical concepts, sonata form as used by
Romantic composers.

The Life and Music of Richard Wagner
Brief
biography of Wagner and his relationship to the other Romantic
composers. Operatic and symphonic writing, political ideologies.

Weeks 9 and 10
Final preparation for juries and recitals.
