  During our Forth Quarter we will be learning about the experimental music of the avant-garde period.   Significant composers include , Olivier Messiaen, Henry Cowell, Conlon Noncarrow, Gyorgy Ligeti, Guther Schuller, and John Cage.

Week 1 -- The Life and Music of Olivier Messiaen
Biographical information, synathesia, modes of limited transposition, bird calls,  Quartet for the End of Time, ondes martenot, theremin, Three Small Liturgies on the Divine Presence

Week 2 -- Henry Cowell and Conlon Nancarrow
Biographical information, unusual piano techniques, use of player piano (pianola), The Banshee, tone cluster pieces, indeterminacy, player piano pieces, rhythmicon

Week 3 -- Gyorgy Ligeti and Gunther Schuller
Biographical information, Atmospheres, score study

Week 4 -- John Cage
Biographical information, Merce Cunningham, David Tudor, aleatoric music, Indian influence and relationship to Western tradition, 4'33", Imaginary Landscapes for 11 Radios and 22 Performers, prepared piano, Sonatas and Interludes for Prepared Piano

Week 5 -- Philip Glass, John Adams, Henryck Gorecki

Week 6, 7 -- Final Paper
