DSA’s yoga class is an exciting new 6th grade wheel class which offers comprehensive education and practice in the fundamentals and development of yoga skills and knowledge.   Students will explore many aspects yoga, participate in multiple yoga sessions, and will learn to choreograph and lead their own yoga routines.  Students will also learn basic Pilates moves.  Most importantly, students will learn how yoga can be an effective tool for developing a stronger body and mind.

Yoga is a practice which brings strength, flexibility, and balance into perfect harmony.  It’s about expanding your boundaries, yet finding your limits, while simultaneously finding peace and harmony within yourself and the world around you.

Modifications:
Yoga routines will be lead in a way that allows students of all levels and flexibilities to experience a challenging, yet comfortable workout. Students are always encouraged to modify yoga routines to accommodate their individual needs—they will be given instructions on how to best modify postures accordingly.

Clothing:
All students are required to dress out in comfortable clothing before each class.
1. Clothing for yoga should be light and stretchy.  Lycra pants/shorts and tops are preferred; however, anything similar will be fine.  Just make sure jeans or baggy clothes aren’t worn.  If clothes are too baggy, it’s difficult to tell if the student may be moving in an incorrect way that could result in injury.
2.No Shoes—yoga is to be done barefooted

Grading:
Grading is based on attendance, participation (which includes wearing appropriate clothing), small projects, and a final project.  Unless students have an excused illness or injury or are excused for school related activities, they are expected to wear appropriate yoga clothing and participate in class.

Recommended Materials

YOGA MAT-A yoga mat is not required, but is STRONGLY RECOMMENDED.  Yoga mats can easily be purchased at a variety of stores all around Denver; however, they are most inexpensive at discount stores, such as Ross and TJ Max ($6-$7).
