Course Description:
The first semester of American History is designed to help students understand the events, issues, and personalities that shaped our history from the Civil War to the end of World War 1. The course looks at American history from the multiple perspectives of this diverse and ethnically rich nation. Students will develop analytic skills in historical inquiry, problem solving, cause and effect synthesis, and evaluation of historic information. Students will also gain the skills and knowledge needed to understand various connections and interdependence of political, economic, technological and philosophical aspects of United States' society. The second semester addresses the years 1920 - present.
The class will:
Review and reinforce the students knowledge and appreciation of U.S. History from the Civil War to contemporary times.
Study the impact of Economics, Religion, Technology, and Immigration on American culture.
Study the interactions between the expanding American nation, indigenous peoples, and foreign powers.
Absences: Due to the nature of the program, it is helpful for the student to be in attendance in each class everyday. Please try to schedule other activities outside the school calendar.
Homework and Independent Reading/ Projects: Students will be assigned a variety of out of class assignments. It is expected that students will be responsible to turn in all assignments when due. Late work is accepted but at a reduced percentage.
Assessment Methods:
Quizzes, quarter exams and semester finals, Individual and Group projects and Presentations, Homework, and Class Participation. I grade on a semester basis rather than the averaging of nine week quarters.
Grading Scale for this class is the traditional 90% - 100% = A, 80- 89 = B, 70 - 79 = C, 60 - 69 = D, and 59% and below = F.
