Middle School students in DSA Piano will be studying the composers of the Baroque Period this year.  We will devote at least 45 minutes on Mondays through Thursdays in this discussion.  Fridays will be devoted to student presentations and performances.   There will be periodic reviews and quizzes;  students will know well in advance of these quizzes.

Featured composers include:

Claudio Monteverdi
Monteverdi was the first major composer of opera.  He had an interesting and full life and composed music that is still featured in concerts today.

Jean-Baptiste Lully
Lully was the friend of Louis XIV, invented conducting, and eventually became one of the most powerful figures in the entire history of music.

Georg Phillip Telemann
During his day he was the most famous composer in Europe.  One church was forced to accept J.S. Bach as its organist because Telemann wasn't available.

Johann Sebastian Bach
Bach is the considered one of the greatest composers in the hisotry of music, and was certainly the supreme composer of the high Baroque.

George Frideric Handel
Handel, though German, was successful in England.  His major focus was opera and oratorio.  He was the major "big thinker" of the Baroque Period.

Domenico Scarlatti
Scarlatti's keyboard works are often performed yet today.  His contentious relationship with his father, Allessandro, is still one of the most interesting biographical stories in the history of music.

We will begin the study with an overview of the Baroque style, its literature and art, where it came from, and where it went after it ended.
