Ceramics I Elective

Course Objective
This is a beginning class structured to introduce students to a variety
of hand-building methods including pinching, coiling ,slab
construction, low-fire glaze and surface decoration.
Projects
and Procedures 1. The projects in this class should be thought of as a
sequence of skill building exercises which are intended to challenge
your imagination, inventiveness, and creativity.
2. The projects will emphasize literacy by including vocabulary works,
art historical research, and reading assignments related to the field
of ceramics. 3. Assignments and demonstrations will generally be given
at the beginning of the class period. Your prompt arrival to class will
insure you receive the important information given.
Assignments:
Inch by inch, coil built pot with a nature design, animal Pinch pot, a Japanese tea bowl, slab built box, and a mask. Other assignments may be given if time
allows.
Requirements:
A small sketchbook for class notes and drawings is required. There is a fee of $15.00 which pays for clay, glazes, and firing.
Grading
Policy
Your grade in this class will be based on effort, punctuality,
attendance, completed works, behavior, cleanup, vocabulary test, and
your sketchbook.
Rules
Students need to be familiar with all Denver School of the Arts rules
listed in your planner. No food is allowed in any Visual Arts Studio.
You may bring water to drink. No cell phones, headphones, etc. are
allowed in the studio. No horseplay.
