A Cultural Expoloration of Language Arts

Greetings!  Welcome to the 7th grade language arts homepage:)  This course utilizes the value of cultural studies to aid in the development of language arts skills, including reading comprehension and analysis, writing, researching and presenting.  Due to the nature of our school and the many unique, unique learning styles of artists, the course will allow for much philosophical, creative, and artistic exploration in addition to helping students become technically strong readers, writers and speakers.  And though students will be required to work hard in this academically rigorous course, every year the feedback is rich with comments about how interesting and fun the class was.  However, don't take my word for it, check out just a few of the many comments that were left on my whiteboard over the past few years:

"This class not only taught me more about writing than I'd ever learned before, but a lot about creativity too; throughout the course, we were having too much fun to realize how much we were learning!"
--former student '06
"I never really liked to read before this class; I think it's because I just hadn't discovered the right books or something.  I've learned this year that there are books that I can't put down...and ones that contain meaning all humans can relate to."--former student '07
"This class was about stuff that actually matters.  It helped me become much more aware of the world and my role in it." --former student '08
"I learned so much, not only things like how to spell and the proper way to write essays but also about myself and
who I wanted to be!"  --former student '09

I am extremely enthusiastic about working with each and every student and feel confident that we are going to have a spectacular year!  Cheers!
