Week of November 26-30
Wednesday
- This will be a short class as a result of benchmark testing. We will begin our presentations.
Friday -Finish our presentations. Begin the next unit.
Week of November 19-20
Students watched The Core and observed a lot of bad science.
Happy Thanksgiving!
Week of November 13-16
I was away all week on jury duty. Students turned in their final projects about Bedrock Geology.
Week of November 5 - November 9
Monday - We have a quiz. Students finished up their assignment on geologic mapping of the US. Timelines are due. Each group must submit a timeline to me, so I know that the project is being worked on.
Wednesday - I will be passing back the homework in the library. We are meeting in the library. This is a day to work with your groups and do research for your Bedrock Geology project. Don't forget to answer the questions in the project and follow the rubric!
Friday - We are meeting in the library. This is a day to work with your groups and research for your Bedrock Geology project. Don't forget to answer the questions in the project and follow the rubric! This is the last school day dedicated to the projects. They are due on November 14! You will be presenting on that day!
Homework: Finish your projects!
Week of October 29-November 2
Wednesday: Students received the culminating assignment. This handout includes a timeline that I am expecting students to follow. The assignment is due on Nov. 14.
We had a lecture over Geologic History. This goes with Chapter 6. Students received the powerpoint lecture in a handout.
Students also received the study guide for the quiz on Monday. Below is the Study Guide

Friday: Finish lecture. Go over Chapter 6 and 7. Quiz on Monday.
Homework: Project due Nov. 14. Quiz on Monday.
Week of October 15 - 19
This is the final week of the first quarter.
Monday - Complete labs.
Homework - Write a lab report based on the completed lab. Read Digging Deeper. Questions will be assigned. These questions should be done on the same sheet as the lab report. I will be grading them on Wednesday.
Wednesday - Class notes. Start new investigation.
Friday - TBD
Week of October 8 - 12
Wednesday - I passed back the quizzes from last week. We completed the Rock Unit investigation and began the next unit. Students are investigating how rocks are able to bend over time, but they do not break.
Journals were collected at the end of class for a journal check. This is worth 30 points. They should of had, "Rock Unit Investigation" "Geowords" and "Understand..." in their journals.
Friday - A step away from the investigation. The students will be watching Planet Earth's "Pole to Pole" and "Mountains" in class. They will have an assignment where they need to identify specific details about each sphere of the earth, and then follow it up with how the spheres are related. We will continue with the investigation on Monday.
Week of October 1 - October 5
Monday - Students finished their geologic map. They were using the key to determine the age and rock type of Colorado. We then took some class notes about Igneous Rocks.
Wednesday - Class began with a discussion about how the spheres of the earth relate to one another. This is the central theme of this class. We finished notes about metamorphic rocks. Students began their next investigation about rock units. They also received their study guide for the quiz on Friday.
Homework: Quiz on Friday
Here is the study guide:
Study Guide for 9th Grade Metamorphic Rock, Igneous Rock, Eras, Geologic Map, and Topographic Map Quiz (plus some review from Sedimentary Rock)
*Rock Cycle *Contour lines *Key
*Geologic Map *Topographic Map *Granite
*Intrusive Igneous Rock *Extrusive Igneous Rock
*Igneous Rock *Metamorphic Rock *Texture
*Color *Pyroclastic flow *Data Table
*Eras *Magma *Classifying Rocks
*Protoliths *Minerals
Friday: Quiz today. Students are going to continue working on the rock unit investigation when they complete their quiz.
Homework: Complete the questions from pages U34 and U35 for Wednesday.
Week of September 24-28
Wednesday - Students will be categorizing igneous and metamorphic rocks. Last week, there was a homework assignment about "autos vs. motorcycles" and "cats vs. dogs". They idea is to recognize what are good categories to use when trying to classify certain things. Upon completing their investigations, the students will then use their inquiries and discover the rocks they were studying.
Homework - Read "Digging Deeper" pgs. U17-U20. Add Geowords to Journal. Answer Check Your Understanding pgs. U20 #1-4. Read "Digging Deeper" pgs. U27-U30. Add GeoWords to Journal. Answer Check Your Understanding U30 #1-3.
Friday - Students will lead a class discussion about Igneous and Sedimentary Rocks. We will continue our geologic map investigation.
Homework - Quiz next Friday.
Week of September 10-14
Wednesday - We will identify our rocks from the rock "line-up" and see how well we did with our descriptions. We will finish our look at the geologic and topographic maps.
Homework: Quiz on Friday. There may be more homework. I will let you know on Wednesday, and on the website.
Study Guide for 9th Grade Sedimentary Rock, Geologic Map, and Topographic Map Quiz
*Rock Cycle *Clastic Sedimentary Rock *Organic Sedimentary Rock *Geologic Map *Topographic Map *Limestone *Conglomerate *Sandstone *Coal *Shale *Sediment *Rock Salt *Precipitation *Compaction *Cementation *Natural Resources *Chemical Sedimentary Rock
Friday: Quiz today. We will begin the chapter on Igneous Rocks. While the quiz is going on, I will do a journal check.
Week of September 4 - 7
Wednesday - We will be looking at different kinds of sedimentary rocks and how to tell them apart. We will be investigating clastic, chemical, and organic sedimentary rocks. We will also be looking at geologic maps of Colorado. These will help students understand the types of rocks that are in the Denver area.
Homework: Read pages U8 - U12 from your book. In your journal or notebook, answer the "Check Your Understanding" questions #1-4 from page U12. Add the Geowords to your journal, as they will be referred to throughout the unit.
Friday - We will start with geologic maps again and continue to study why they are important to Geologists. We will have a student lead discussion about Sedimentary Rocks. Choose an area of Colorado that you would like to do for the Chapter Challenge.
Homework: Bring in a sedimentary rock from your neighborhood. On a piece of paper describe the rock so that another scientist would be able to find it in a rock "line-up." As well, using your notes, tell me what type of rock you think it is (i.e. limestone, sandstone, conglomerate, etc).
Week of August 27 - 31
Monday - Most students are away at Challenge Day today.
Wednesday - We will be going over the pre-test from Friday, and beginning our unit on Bedrock and our community. We will be looking at the types of rock there are and two types of maps, geologic and topographic.
Week of August 20 - 24
Welcome to the first week of school. Please be patient as we get
the classes organized and students in the right places.
