1st Year Minors
This nine weeks, we will continue to explore stories and storytelling. Students have interviewed their kindergarten students at Phillip's Elementary School. They are using these interviews as the inspiration for the picture books they are composing. Their first draft is due Wed, Nov 7th. Additionally, they are working on a setting story, which must include one of three places (photographs displayed on posters) in a story due at the end of the nine weeks (Dec 15th). On Halloween, we will conclude our oral storytelling unit.
In preparation for our poetry unit next nine weeks, all first year minors are required to memorize 7 poems, which they will then recite aloud to the class over seven Fridays. Their first poem is due on Friday, Nov 2nd. This project will allow students to become intimately aware of the writing of established poets; thereby, strengthening their own creations.
All other assignments will be listed on IC as they are assigned. Please note that the students have requested I put 0s next to the assignments they have not submitted, even those not due until the end of the semester. They feel this will better help them see what they need to turn in and how missing assignments will effect their grade. Be sure to look at assignment due dates before panicking about your student's grade.
Advanced Minors
All four students have written their contracts for the second nine weeks. In addition to their contracts, they are responsible for one memorized poem (to be recited aloud for their classmates in the next seven weeks) and an Object Love Poem (due Friday, Oct 9th). There will be some Finger Exercises they will write with the first years as well.
We discussed the challenging task of composing a novella that the advanced minors have all taken on for this year. Since they meet less often then the majors, we've decided that they will be responsible for 60pages instead of 80 at the end of the year.
The Creative Writing Minors class curriculum is closely modeled off the Major's curriculum, which was developed by the former Department Chair Jana Clark.
