For tickets contact Michelle McLeod at: mcleodrm@msn.comWeekly Sketchbook Assignment, Due Monday May 19 "Let's Say Thanks" Postcard Contest As part of the Democratic National Convention in August, MS students are asked to submit original artwork for use on printed postcards signed by the public and delivered to troops stationed abroad. Subject matter should include patriotic themes or regional landmarks of Denver and Colorado. Think about our civic buildings, parks, skyline or mountains. Winning cards will judged and selected for printing. Designs must be postcard sized on white paper in the media of your choice. No glitter or metallic ink.

Visual Arts Syllabus 2008 Foundations, Level II, Grades 7 8, Ms. Rosenbaum Art History Throughout history, most cultures have used the human body as a subject matter in their art. We will focus on depiction of the body as challenging proportional study, a form for personal expression and as a structure for adornment. Students will study the depiction of humans from major periods of history and various cultures to learn basic stylistic and period vocabulary. Instruction will include slide lectures, readings, research and art projects. Emphasis will be on the portrayal of the human form in various societies and the analysis of art elements and principles of design in diverse works of art.
Drawing Students will build on fundamental art concepts and rendering skills with additional practice in the following areas: Perspective Definition of form through subtle and dramatic value changes Proportional study of the human body Rendering of various textures and surfaces including fabrics Still life, portraiture, narrative drawing Organization of picture space
Activities and Assignments Weekly sketchbook assignments, submitted on Mondays for class critique Written work including Art Gallery Reviews, reports and research Class critiques Lecture and class discussion, slide presentations, research on specific artists Observational drawing: from live models, fabrics and embellishments, interiors Quizzes and tests on art history vocabulary and processes Field trip to Museum of Nature and Science and the Denver Art Museum Large 3-dimensional hat/helmet project
Grading Grading is cumulative for the entire semester. Written work, homework assignments, class participation/preparation and printmaking projects are all important components of this class. Technical writing skills are integrated into the class through reviews, essays and quizzes. Late or incomplete work is penalized 10% per school day. Students are expected to complete ALL assignments on time. No late work is accepted the last week of the quarter. Students with excused absences will be allowed 2 days per day absent to complete work before penalties are applied. Incomplete work may not be shown at a final critique. Students who habitually turn in work late will be penalized an additional 10% for not participating in critiques. Participation and preparation points are awarded each quarter and include attendance, cooperation, studio responsibility and attitude. Behavior Expectations The sketchbook and toolbox are required in class every day. ALL art projects should be retained in students portfolios for annual re-audition. Department rules are clearly stated in the VA Handbook and should be reviewed on the web page. All VA students are expected to be familiar with these rules and follow them. NO FOOD of any kind (except water bottles) is permitted in VA classrooms. Students are not allowed in the Bookroom or Jewelry studio without teacher permission. Focus for the full 90-minute period is the only way to get quality work completed. Personal headphones are discouraged and allowed only with daily permission from the instructor. Cell phones are confiscated if seen or heard in class.
