Narrative Box Project.  Due in critique on Wednesday, 5/7.  Begin totem wood project with sketches first, then  collection of wood pieces. 


SYLLABUS: Introduction to Sculpture
 Intermediate Art, Level I-A, Grades 8 – 9

Rationale
Sculpture adds a third dimension to traditional art forms of drawing and painting with the introduction of mass, volume and depth.   Through a variety of simple building exercises, students will explore ways to define and delineate space.  Spatial studies lead to more complex exercises where students will manipulate clay, wood and metal using additive and subtractive methods.

Course Objectives/Standards to be Addressed
Students will demonstrate knowledge of basic sculpting techniques including subtractive carving, additive
             modeling, mold making and assemblage.

Students will recognize and use sculpture as a form of creativity and communication.
Students will demonstrate knowledge of the art elements and principles of design as applied to 3-dimensional art,
             including form, mass and volume

Students will demonstrate knowledge of the expressive and creative features of 3-dimensional art
Students will appropriately use and apply various sculpting materials, tools, techniques, and processes including
     chisels, rasps, saws, wood, clay, and metal.

Students will relate sculpture to various historical and cultural traditions.
Students will analyze and evaluate the characteristics, merits and meanings of sculpture as works of art.

Activities and Assignments
•  Weekly sketchbook assignments, submitted on Mondays for class critique 
•  Three Art Gallery Reviews and one Professional Artist Interview are required
•  Mandatory attendance at both VA quarter art exhibitions 
•  Class critiques
•  Lecture and class discussion, slide presentations, research on specific artists
• Three Sculpture Projects (expect to spend time out of class to complete major projects) 
•  Quizzes and tests on vocabulary and process
•  Field trip to the Denver Art Museum

Grading
Grading is cumulative for the entire semester and includes printmaking quarter.  Written work, homework assignments, class participation and printmaking projects are all important components of this class.  Technical writing skills are integrated into the sculpture study through reviews, essays and quizzes.
•  Late or incomplete work is penalized 10% per school day. 
    Students are required to complete ALL assignments. 
    No late work is accepted the last week of the quarter.
    Students with excused absences will be allowed 2 days per day absent to complete work         before penalties are applied.    
    Incomplete work may not be shown at a final critique. Projects turned in late will be             penalized an additional 10% for failure to participate in the critique. 
•  Most assignments are worth 10 points each.  Large projects are worth 15 – 25 points.
•  Participation and critique points are awarded each quarter and  include attendance, cooperation, studio     responsibility and attitude

Behavior Expectations
The sketchbook and toolbox are required in class every day.  ALL art projects should be retained in students’ portfolios for annual re-audition.
•  Aspiring artists should be open to trying new techniques and receptive to learning
    about all areas of art.  A positive, inquisitive mind-set is expected from all artists.
•  Critique participation is required as a major part of the art school process.
•  All students are expected to care for the studio space, equipment and supplies in a cooperative and responsible manner.  Clean up and replacement of tools is everyone’s      responsibility.   NO FOOD (except water bottles) is permitted in VA classrooms.
Students are not allowed in the Bookroom or Jewelry studio without teacher
permission.
•  Focus for the full 90-minute period with no excessive socializing or horseplay.
•  Respectful behavior toward the instructor, peers and the artwork of others
•  Most major projects require work outside of class.  Check with instructors for availability of the studio school, during free periods, lunch, or after school.
•  Personal headphones prevent students from being part of a cooperative learning studio environment.  Use of headphones is discouraged and is allowed only with DAILY permission from the instructor.  Cell phones will be confiscated if seen or heard in class.
 •  Daily attendance and work in the studio is a crucial part of this class.  All students are expected to be in the studio and quiet when class starts.  Students must serve a lunch detention with the instructor after their third tardy.      Failure to serve the detention will result in a school referral.  Repeated absences and tardies will effect the participation grade.

Independent student research to explore specific print artists and techniques
Written gallery reviews of sculpture shows
Weekly sketchbook assignments to create a visual sourcebook for subject matter
Oral class critiques to provide constructive feedback on projects
Practice of techniques and creation of four major pieces
Quizzes to access student understanding of vocabulary and technical process
