Weekly Sketchbook Assignment,  Due Monday May 19
Five Mouths
This is an observational drawing from life in the mirror!  do not make up mouths or characters.  Change the angle and expression on each mouth and make them at least life sized or bigger.

Classwork for Week of May 12
Complete family sculptures and box pieces.  Be sure to have labels on all site specific pieces and hang your figurative piece for the banquet.  Field trip Friday to Starz Film Center.



VISUAL ARTS SYLLABUS
   2008 Intermediate Art, Level II, Grades 10-11,
Ms. Rosenbaum

Art History
Students will study Modern and Contemporary Art Movements from Impressionism through Contemporary “New Media”.   Content will include history and development of the Poster as a major force in graphic design, and the use of “new” diverse art materials and themes in contemporary art.   An exploration of site specific, installation and performance art will be a major focus.  Students will apply previously learned skills to analyze the use of art elements and principles of design in diverse, challenging works of art.
    
Studio Work
Students will build on established concepts and skills with projects in the following areas:
•  Graphic Design and Poster Art including the use of type as a design element
•  Figure drawing from live models
•  Mixed media installation project based on a selected site within DSA
•  Exploration of personal identity through self-portrait

Juniors are expected to select media and tailor their class assignments to complete the Breadth Portfolio.  Juniors should individually with the instructor to review their breadth work or work on assigned projects with the 10th grade.

Students will demonstrate knowledge of basic drawing, painting, 3-Dimensional and             compositional techniques
Students will demonstrate knowledge of the art elements and principles of design.
Students will demonstrate and recognize expressive, communicative and creative features     of art, with emphasis on contemporary media and graphic design
Students will appropriately use various materials, tools, techniques, and processes to execute     site specific and graphic works of art
Students will relate visual arts to various historical and cultural traditions.
Students will analyze and evaluate the characteristics, merits and meanings of works
 of art.

Activities and Assignments
Written work including Art Gallery Reviews, Professional Artist Interview, reports, and             research on selected artists and styles
Lecture, class discussion, demonstrations and independent research
Weekly sketchbook assignments and critiques to create a visual sourcebook for subject matter     and practice critique skills
Oral class critiques concluding major projects to provide constructive feedback
Major class projects (expect to spend time out of class to complete these assignments!)   
Field trip to the Denver Art Museum and/or selected gallery shows

Grading
Grading is cumulative for the entire semester.  Written work, homework assignments, class participation/preparation as well as projects are all important components of this class.  Technical writing skills are integrated into the class through reviews, essays and quizzes.
  Late or incomplete work is penalized 10% per school day.  Students are expected to     complete ALL assignments on time.  No late work is accepted the last week of the     quarter.  Students with excused absences will be allowed 2 days per day absent to     complete work before penalties are applied. Incomplete work may not be shown at a final     critique. Students who habitually turn in work late will be penalized an additional 10% for     not participating fully in critiques.  Participation and preparation points are awarded each     quarter and include attendance, cooperation, studio responsibility and attitude.

Behavior Expectations
The sketchbook and toolbox are required in class every day.  All art projects should be retained in students’ portfolios for annual re-audition.
All VA students are expected to be familiar with VA Department rules and follow them.
These rules are reviewed at the beginning of the semester and can be viewed in the Department Handbook on the web page.
No food of any kind (except water bottles) is permitted in VA classrooms.
Students are not allowed in the Bookroom or Jewelry studio without teacher permission.
