  Week of January 8th

Tuesday students will be given a syllabus. Please note that the required reading books, Out of the Dust by Karen Hesse and How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accent by Julia Alvarez, need to arrive with them in class on Thursday, January 17th.  We will read an excerpt from Adrienne Rich's essay, "Claiming an Education", and discuss how to claim vs. receive.  Students will generate a list of all the female authors they have read, and we will discuss.  Finally, students will write for 10min to the prompt, "What does it mean to be a woman?", and we will discuss in class.  Their homework is to create or find an aesthetic response to this prompt (poem, painting, monologue, sculpture, vocal music, instrumental music, etc) for class on Thurs.

Thursday students will share their aesthetic responses.  Next we will read "A Work of Artifice" by Marge Piercy and discuss.  Then they will receive their Woman Writer Multi-Genre Research Paper assignment and look at an example.  Woman Writer Multi-Genre Research Paper rubric

I am excited to have the opportunity to teach this class. I am looking forward to a great semester.
