April 7 - April 11
Monday - Finish Lecture about universe and moon.
Homework: Read pages E31-E34 answer #1-3 page E35. Read pages E41-E44 answer "Check Your Understanding" page E45 #1-4.
Wednesday - History lecture about astronomers. We then took a look at Kepler's law, and worked on creating orbits. Bring your homework to class on Friday.
Friday - Impacts of Asteroids and other space objects. We will watch the Asteroids video from National Geographic. We will then have a lecture about orbit, impact, and effects of the sun.
Homework: Quiz will be on Wednesday.

Understand that Earth’s place in the solar system, galaxy and universe is measured with different units, AU (astronomical unit), light years and parsecs.

Monday - Students are beginning a new unit about Plate Tectonics. They worked in the computer lab to research Plate Tectonics, and they will present their PowerPoints to the class on Wednesday.
Homework: Complete Plate Tectonics PowerPoint.
Wednesday: Students will present their PowerPoint on Plate Tectonics. It is expected to last at least ten minutes as they will inform the class of their research. We will work on Investigation #1 in class. It is an Investigation about the plates of the earth and the directions they travel.

January 28 - February 1
Wednesday - We reviewed for the test on Friday. Volcano stories were due. We read some of the volcano stories in class. We will finish the stories on Friday.

Friday - Test today. We will then finish our volcano models. We will continue to share the stories.
Week of January 22-25
Wednesday - Students received their gases labs back. Completed a lecture about volcanoes. Took notes about Airborne debris, types of volcanic rock, and how to measure volcano activity.
Homework:
Students received three assignments: 1) Homework due Friday 1/25 - page G42 #1-4 "Understanding and Applying What you have Learned" and "Inquiring Further" #1 a & b. 2) Volcano Project - Individual project. This is due on Wednesday January 30. There is a typo on the sheet, it says the due date is Friday, but it is really due on Wednesday. 3) Study Guide for the Volcano Exam was handed out. The volcano exam is Friday, Feb. 1.
Friday - Students are going to have time to work on their model volcanoes in class.
Week of January 14 - 18
Monday - Students turned in their homework and we had a discussion about pyroclastic flow and lava flow. We completed a lecture on Airborne Debris. Students continued to work on their volcanoes.
Wednesday - We are going to take a little break from volcanoes and discuss recycling. We are also going to go to the classrooms in the school and discuss the recycling program here at DSA.
No homework.
Friday - We will continue with Activity 5 in our book. This lab will be about removing carbonation from water. Students will work on a separate sheet of paper and complete the lab on page 39. This will be due to me at the end of class.
There will be a quiz next Friday. You will receive your study guide Wed. Jan 23.
Week of January 8 - 11
Friday - Today we will be discussing lava flows in a lecture format. We will continue to build our volcanoes.
Homework - Read pgs. G34-G36 and answer #2-5 from page G36.
Read the Outside Magazine article "Joe Blow." Write a review of the article and state scientific fact in your review. Include your opinions of what you think of the article and support your opinion with facts from the article why you liked or disliked the article. Total points for write-up 25 points.
Wednesday - Welcome Back!!!!! Today we are going to start building a volcano in class. This project will go for two weeks as we complete our volcano unit. I expect you to understand about the different parts of volcanoes, the destructive force of volcanoes, the effects of the slope of the volcano, and much more. While in class, we will use the time to build our volcanoes, but outside of class I expect you to stay on top of the readings and homework.
Homework due Friday - Read Digging Deeper pg. G26-G28. Answer Check Your Understanding pg G28 #1-6. If you need any extra materials for the volcano, please bring it in. I will bring another bucket of Plaster of Paris, but if you have any that you can donate, I would appreciate it. Thanks!
Build a volcano assignment (This is in class)
Materials that I will provide
1 plastic box – you will build the group volcano inside the box. 1 black sharpie 1 measuring tape access to plaster of paris access to sand and gravel access to a sponge measuring beakers materials that are in this room If you need to bring outside materials you may
Draw 1 cm squared grid on the outside of the volcano
Your volcano should be one of three types of volcanoes: Shield volcano, Composite volcano, and cinder volcano
You will have to create and measure the flow of lava or pyroclastic flow created by your volcano. That is why you will need to create a graph on your volcano.
You will have to measure how much material you put into your volcano (by material I mean “magma” so that you have an accurate model when you do the explosion over and over)
You will need to measure the distance the flow travels as well as how long it takes to travel that distance. You will need to graph it. You will need to have two different tests. One with high silica and one with low silica.
On a separate sheet of paper you will be able to label the parts of the volcano that you have made. You may use toothpicks and put flags on the volcano too.
Some of you may want to bring in plastic hose and have air blow out your volcano debris. That is fine, you will be measuring the tephra and how far it travels.
