1. Mutant Message Down Under by Marlo Morgan
The controversial story of an American woman who is captured and forced to live with and follow the customs of an Aboriginal tribe in the Outback of Australia.  Medium Reading Level

2. The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini
This powerful novel traces the unlikely friendship of a wealthy Afghan youth and his servant after a terrible event occurs that threatens their friendship forever.

3.  Night by Elie Wiesel
This terrifying true story documents the experience of a teenage boy who endures  the horror of living through a Nazi death camp during the Jewish Holocaust.  Throughout his experience, which includes much loss and devastation, he questions humanity and the existence of God.    Rated PG-13 to R;  medium reading level

4. Kira-Kira by Cynthia Kadohota
A sweet story that paints a beautiful picture of the bond between sisters and chronicles the experience of two Japanese-American sisters growing up in rural Georgia during the late 1950s.  Easy-Medium Reading Level

7.Red Scarf Girl by Ji-Li Jiang
This true story of a young girl in communist China shows how propaganda of the time brainwashed people so much that they were often oblivious to their families falling apart and the chaos around them.  Medium Reading Level

8. Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See
This striking narrative, set in 19th century China illustrates the complexity of the strong and beautiful, yet contentious lifelong friendship of two girls.  The story illustrates the process of them growing into women and sharing stories through Nu-shu, a secret language developed by women to communicate away from the influence of men.

9. Breaking Through by Francisco Jimenez
This novel shows the hardships endured by Mexicans in America in terms of immigration issues and cultural misunderstandings.  The main character, a 14-year-old boy, and his family are migrant workers in California; after working illegally in America for years, the family is caught by immigration officials and are forced to leave their home.   Medium Reading Level
