Course Description
This class is a fundamentals class and will integrate the study of the principles and elements of design. The first nine weeks will include a variety of exercises in two dimensions with an emphasis in color theory, drawing and painting. The second nine weeks will include various exercises in three-dimensional design. Assignments will incorporate Art History.
Projects and Procedures
1. The projects in this class should be thought of as a sequence of skill building exercises and are intended to challenge your imagination, inventiveness, and creativity.
2. The projects will emphasize literacy by including vocabulary, and art historical research. Math will be emphasized though problems based on measurements, scale, and size.
3. Assignments and demonstrations will generally given at the beginning of the class period. Your prompt arrival will insure you receive the important information given.
4. There will be a critique after each assignment has concluded. Critiques get you used to talking about your artwork based on the formal issues of the principles and elements of design and aesthetic concerns. There will be a rubric given for each assignment so students know what is required for each assignment.
Assignments
Students will explore various media with an emphasis on the elements and principles of design. Students will do sketches to prepare for each assignment. The teacher will determine the number of sketches. Students will go outdoors and study buildings, and the landscape through various media when weather permits. Students will study the human figure by visiting the dance studio and sketching the dancers, the music department and the theater department. Students will their recent DSA's Visual Arts Nine Week Exhibitions and the DPS Art Show this spring. Students will enter other contests as announced. Artwork will be made in class for these contests.
#1 Study of Line and Shapes, #2 Botticelli and circular compositions, #3 Five figures in five shapes, #4 India Ink Plant Drawings, #4 Narrative Painting from Japanese Folk Stories. #5 newspaper puppets, #6 Plaster wrap actions figures, #7 Clay Figure Sculpture or mask. We will do less or more as determined by teacher.
Requirements
Students need to come to class with their sketchbooks and toolboxes everyday.
Grading Policy
Your grade in this class will be based on effort, behavior, participation, tests, research, critiques, cleanup, two gallery visits, and your sketchbook.
