Denver School of the Arts Visual Arts Department Portfolio Development Spring 2008 11th and 12th Grades Pamela Hawkins (pamela_hawkins@dpsk12.org)
Overview: This class is designed to allow advanced students to develop their visual arts portfolio based on the College Board AP Studio guidelines by the end of the senior year. Submission for AP Studio credit is in May, juniors and seniors can apply which requires a payment of $85 in March (per Mr. Castillo) to the College Board. Students who score either a 4 or 5 will receive college credit. If you are interested make sure the college you apply to accepts this credit.
Art school bound seniors should identify schools of interest within the first semester so they may plan for specific portfolio requirements and scholarships. If you need letter of recommendation be sure to give teacher plenty of time in advance. Art scholarship money is awarded by portfolio review so seniors are encouraged to be portfolio ready. Juniors should begin to show portfolios to college reps for feedback and summer school scholarships.
First semester will focus on completion of the “breadth” requirements for the AP Studio requirements and for applying to art schools. All juniors will bring in their portfolio for the instructor and student to look at and determine where the “holes” in the breadth part of their portfolios are. Students are to show sketches for each artwork before beginning actual works. Juniors will have critiques on what the instructor and student have mutually decided on which occur the same day as the seniors. Please look at Critique Schedule.
Seniors will be working on six works of art determined by student and instructor review of portfolio. Seniors will present five new artworks for the senior exhibition, which is April 19th through the 26th at the Art Students League. Seniors as a group will design their invitations and decide when the reception will be and what type of refreshments they will have.
Juniors and seniors will have three gallery reviews and one artist interview due this semester. See schedule.
Individualized instruction will occur based on students concentration and needs.
Rubric Used for grading artworks in Critiques: Concept (Idea) = 20 points Creativity = 20 points Craftsmanship = 20 points Composition = 20 points Color = 20 points 100 points
