1. Thesis Statement:  A one-sentence thesis statement, which clearly states your position on a sound controversial issue is evident and is located toward the end of the first paragraph. All information/support within the research paper falls under the thesis statement.

2. Format & Organization: The paper is written in standard MLA format, which includes margins, page numbers, title (central research question) and most importantly, internal citations after quotations, paraphrasing of sources, etc. The paper also demonstrates clear organization of ideas, including properly placed topic sentences and appropriate paragraph division.

3. Development of ideas/adequate support : Paragraphs are developed to thoroughly support the central topic in a variety of ways, including substantial support for your particular position on the issue.  Main ideas that support the thesis statement are backed up with relevant research using a variety of techniques—quotes, summaries, paraphrasing.
Also, the introduction should be attention-grabbing and well-developed and the conclusion should wrap things up, while leaving the reader clear on your position.

4. Works Cited Page (Bibliography):  A works cited page including at least three sources from at least two different categories is included.  The bib is in MLA format, which includes proper format of each source, as well as having sources listed alphabetically, in hanging indent, and double-spaced.  A heading titled, “Works Cited” should also be included.

5. Writing Style/Fluency:  Your essay is written professionally (not conversationally), yet shows your own unique writing style.  Word choice is clever and precise, and sentence structure is clear, yet complex and varied. Do not write your paper in 1st person!!!

6. Mechanics:  There are no spelling , punctuation, or grammatical errors (including run-ons, etc.)    The essay is typed, double-spaced, and 12 point font.
