Instructions for Research Paper
The Persuasive Research Paper
Controversial Issues
Over the next few weeks, our class will be working on creating a sound research paper that supports your individual position on a specific controversial issue. Your research paper will be persuasive in the fact that it will provide evidence to support your opinion on the controversial subject matter. Although most of the research process will take place in class, some research and most of your writing will have to take place outside of school.
The following are the requirements for the final research paper:
• 4 (or more) Pages
• Typed, double -spaced, 12 pt. font
• Standard MLA format
• Must include Works Cited page (bibliography)*
• Must include parenthetical citations
*You will need at least 3 credible sources for the research paper. Your sources may come from a variety of categories, which are listed below. Keep in mind, however, that you must have no more than 2 sources from each category.
Categories for Research Sources
1-2: Books
1-2: Articles from online databases (from LION website)
1-2: Credible Internet Sources (PBS.org, etc.)
1-2: Choose from the following categories
-Documentary/Educational Video
-Interview with a specialist in the subject area
-Television or radio program
-Encyclopedia (hard copy)
-article from hard copy magazine or newspaper
-information pamphlet
(You don’t have to have something from every category; you just need to satisfy your 3 source minimum with at least two of the categories.)
DUE DATE(S): Thursday, May 1—Wednesday, May 14
(You may turn in your paper for full credit on any of the days within the aforementioned bracket of time. Keep in mind that papers WILL NOT be accepted after May 13 under any circumstances, not even for partial credit. Also keep in mind that papers turned in earlier will receive the most feedback/corrections from me.)
Your works cited page (bibliography) and basic outline are due with your research paper.
