NHS Charter

Purpose:
-The Denver School of the Arts National Honor Society is a society dedicated to recognizing students for outstanding achievement in the areas of leadership, character, scholarship, and service and who demonstrate and promote the values of citizenship.
-As a member of NHS, one demonstrates to post-secondary institutions that he/she is capable of further succeeding in the environment, which he/she is already excelling.

Membership:
-Induction is an honor bestowed on select Denver School of the Arts student body members.  Selection is based upon demonstrated enthusiasm for scholarship, leadership, character, and service, as well as academic achievement, based on a ¬¬¬¬3.75 GPA (determined by Faculty representative).
-Applicants may qualify, leading into their sophomore, junior, or senior year.
-To be considered for application, the student must first be invited to apply.  Upon invitation, applicant must submit the completed NHS induction form, as well as recommendations from two different teachers that show that the student the above qualities.
-Students are eligible for invitation into the National Honor Society after attending one semester at the Denver School of the Arts.  However, in the event that a student transfers from another high school and holds the grade that determines eligibility for membership, he/she may have a DSA faculty member request recommendation from the previous principal or chapter advisor.
-If an applicant is not invited into the National Honor Society, he/she may re-submit an application in successive years if still eligible.  However, if ever a student is dismissed from the National Honor Society, his/her eligibility is, henceforth, terminated.

Responsibilities:
Members of the National Honor Society have certain responsibilities expected to comply with.  These include upholding the five pillars of scholarship, leadership, community service, citizenship, and character.  As an example of such, members are required to attend all meetings, which occur on the first Monday of every month and comply with the following:
o    52 hours of annual community service hours
-26 due at the December meeting
-26 due at the April meeting

o    Maintain GPA of 3.75
o    Pay one-time annual dues as determined by the needs of the NHS.
o    Participate in at least one of several service projects annually, as offered by the student government of the NHS.

Selection of Student Government:
-Elections for the positions of President, Vice President, Secretary, and Junior Representative will be held during the second to last meeting of each year.
-Candidates will be elected during the meeting preceding the election to ensure the candidates have adequate time to consider their platforms.  Candidates may be from any grade. The candidates for the junior representative, however, must be with the intent to complete 4 additional semesters in DSA.
-Elections will be student-based with the winner holding majority vote.  In the event of a tie, the students with the greatest number of votes will either share office and work as co-officers the following year, or a subsequent election to brake the tie will be held. In this event, the winning candidate must secure a vote of at least one half and one vote.
-Elected officers are expected to be prime examples of an NHS member.  They must comply with membership responsibilities and are subject to the same terms of dismissal as all other members.
-Duties for elected officers begin the summer prior to the school year for which they are elected, as summer opportunities for NHS members may arrise.  It is strongly suggested that new officers meet with previous officers before the end of the year in order to have a smooth transfer of data.  If this does not happen, rely on the junior representative in the following year for information and paperwork regarding the year previous.

Dismissal:
-Students can and will be dismissed for failure to uphold their responsibilities as a member of the National Honor Society.  Grounds for immediate dismissal include but are not limited to:
o    Failure to attend all meetings*
o    Failure to complete required service hours, including participation in one of the several offered group service projects.
o    Failure to maintain a required GPA of 3.75 for a grading period.
*See Meetings below

-If a faculty member notes that a member is failing to uphold the pillars of NHS as stated, they may appeal for the dismissal of that member.  He/she then has the ability to argue the terms of dismissal with the student officers and faculty representative within a period of thirty days.  If such a hearing occurs, final dismissal or reinstatement shall be based on a majority vote from the board.
-Each student is granted all rights of dismissal as stated in Article X of the NHS constitution (available for your viewing pleasure at http://www.nhs.us/s_nhs/sec.asp?CID=135&;DID=5290#art10).
