The Recital

Our recitals are some of the finest musical presentations at DSA.  We feature outstanding young musicians performing repertoire that is difficult both technically and musically.  Our music ranges from Chopin's Nocturnes and Ballades to Shostakovich's Prelude and Fugue No. 24.  We perform it all by memory, and each of our students puts his/her ego, intellect, heart, and soul on the line at each of our recitals to perform this wonderful music.

When our students audition to attend DSA, they demonstrate that they can compete at the advanced skill level of our program.  At the MS level, students offer repertoire including Bach Two-Part Inventions, Clementi Sonatinas, or the easier works of Chopin, Mozart, and Beethoven.  HS students offer repertoire including Mendelssohn's Songs Without Words, easier Beethoven or Mozart Sonatas, Chopin Nocturnes, and similar literature.

Students are required to perform in each of three recitals during the school year.  They are expected to perform music that is at a difficulty level that reflects DSA's advanced program.  They are expected to expand their repertoire both musically and technically, and that their recital offerings will reflect this continued advancement.  There is no grade given for the recital performance; however, students are highly-motivated to give as high-quality performance as possible.  Students participate in a jury process before each recital to ensure that they are ready to perform.  Please consult Jury Requirements for information about these juries, which are the most important part of the DSA Piano curriculum.

All recital pieces must be approved in advance to be included in our performances.  Generally, we can accomplish this informally in the classroom, but private teachers or parents who have questions or concerns are encouraged to address them to Mr. Lassen at dsapiano@aol.com or at ted_lassen@dpsk12.org
