Welcome to the African American literature home page! This course is a combination of literary study, cultural investigation, philosophical exploration and critical analysis of a variety of communication forms (texts) created about and by African Americans from pre-slavery to current day. Particular attention to themes and philosophies dealing with the black experience will bring attention the ways in which African- Americans have contributed to, have been influenced by, have appropriated, and have transformed America.

Overview of Bi-weekly Agenda:
Students will:
a.)look at the role of women during slavery and today through personal narratives and historical accounts;
b.)examine the slave trade and how it contributed to the rise and fall of slavery in the US;
c.)watch and perform slave narrative monologues;
d.)discuss core issues of slavery until the Civil War;
e.)begin examine the various Afro American authors and works that contributed to the abolitionist movement;
f.)read various authors and the diverse perspectives that were key to the Reconstruction movement;
i.)review common errors in spelling, punctuation and grammar.
