Syllabus for HS and MS Students, 2009-10

Syllabus for HS Students

The academic course of study for the year will be Ternary Forms.  We will discuss and analyze the simplest examples of these forms, and then we will investigate how this form has been expanded into larger forms such as the Rondo, Aria, and the Theme with Variations.  We will investigate these forms as they occur throughout music history, beginning with the Middle Ages and Early Baroque and will conclude with progressive Twentieth Century pieces, such as Aaron Copland's "Piano Variations".

There will be at least four written quizzes per quarter for HS Students.  These quizzes will evaluate students' progress through this academic course work.  Students will be notified of quiz dates in class and signficant test dates will also be posted on the DSA Piano website.  Parents and students are generally notified by email of important dates, also.  Generally, students with excused absences may arrange to take missed quizzes or tests in a timely manner.  Students are required to arrange a time with Mr. Lassen to make up any missed work.

HS Students will also be required to learn at least four pieces that will support our discussion of this topic.  Students will be graded using a set of standard piano performance rubrics, and students will regularly use classroom time to work on this music.  Freshmen and Sophomore students may be given extra time to work on these pieces, provided they have demonstrated good practice habits during the Piano Class.

Approximately 20% of the student's semester grade will be based on the various aspects of these academic requirements.  There are several other requirements that affect the student's grade.  Please consult the home page of the website for links to DIS requirements, accompanying and ensemble requirements, music theory requirements, and classroom performance requirements.

Syllabus for MS Students

Middle school students will be learning about the Baroque and Classical Periods this year.  They will be tested weekly, if possible, over material that they learn in the classroom.  We will begin with a discussion of the Baroque and Classical Styles, then will study biographical information about the composers from these periods.  Students will be exposed to the various composer's work through listening examples, and will be involved in activities that supplement our classroom study.
