CLASS SYLLABUS
Foundations, Levels II and III, Grades 7 – 8, Fall 2009, Ms. Rosenbaum

Art History

Through slide lectures, readings, research and art projects students will study the Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque Periods of art. Students will analyze connections between rich patrons, religion and art in the Western World as well as Non-Western societies.  We will also look at patronage as a theme in the history of art and seek to understand links between what artists create and the powers that pay for it.

Studio Work

Students will build on fundamental art concepts and rendering skills in the following areas:
•  Relief and silkscreen printmaking
•  Life Drawing:  skill building in proportion, shading and foreshortening
•  Observational Drawing: Rendering various surfaces including drapery and natural textures
•  Process painting using a variety of materials to build up texture and transparency
Techniques for depicting 3-dimensional space
*  Math Focus: Practice of math skills directly related to art including measuring, fractions and
percentages (enlargements and reductions, mat cutting and construction of 3D forms).

Activities and Assignments

•  Weekly sketchbook assignments to practice drawing skills and stretch creativity
•  Written work including Art Gallery Reviews, reports and research
•  Class critiques in a variety of formats
•  Lecture and class discussion, slide presentations, research on specific artists
•  Observational drawing:  from live models, fabrics, objects
•  Quizzes and tests on art history, vocabulary, materials and processes
•  Field trips

Grading

Grading is cumulative for the entire semester.  Please use the parent IC portal to check grades on a regular basis.
PROGRESS MONITORING:
•    Grades in Infinite Campus will be updated once a week.
•    Every 3 weeks progress/eligibility grades will be used to help identifying struggling students for interventions including tutoring.
•    Every week, IC Messenger will send notices regarding failing assignments.  These are notices of assignments that earned a failing grade (less than 59%).  To verify a student’s class grade, you will need to check IC in more detail.  Please keep in mind the grading policies as stated in this syllabus.  IC Messenger will also send out a message if the student has missed an assignment.  Failing grades will be sent once per week, missing grades may be sent multiple times over a nine-week period. An empty space is not a zero, but indicates a grade has not yet been entered.

Written work, homework assignments, class participation/preparation as well as projects are important components of this class.  Writing and verbal skills are emphasized as major elements in artistic success and are integrated through class discussion, reviews, essays and quizzes. It is recommended that you keep ALL work from the semester until the semester is over and you have received your grades.  Participation points are awarded at the end of each semester and include attendance, attitude, studio responsibility, on-task behaviors, and critiques.

Late or incomplete work .  Students are expected to complete all assignments on time.

Late work is penalized 10% per school day. Students with excused absences will be allowed 2 days per day absent to complete work before penalties are applied. Incomplete work can not be shown in department shows.  It is always better to turn in work late than not at all, however work submitted more than 5 days late is accepted at the discretion of the teacher and must be of high quality to receive a maximum of ½ credit.  Students who do not have a finished project for critique will be penalized an additional 10% off their final grade.  Those who habitually turn in work late will lose participation points.
Make up work from extended unexcused absences, (such as travel) is accepted at the discretion of the instructor.  If you know you will be missing school, you should make arrangements with the teacher before the absence begins.
