SYLLABUS

Rationale

Designed for non-Visual Art Majors, this class will provide students with skills needed to appreciate visual art as well as basic mechanics for drawing and painting.  Commonalities between visual art elements and design principles (such as line, rhythm, movement, unity, contrast) and other art disciplines will be emphasized. No drawing or painting experience is required for this class, however assignments and projects can accommodate those with some experience or advanced skill.

Drawing is the armature for all visual expression and the foundation of art study.  Students will develop observational skills as they explore materials and express their creative vision.  Color, perhaps the most expressive and emotive art element, will be explored through color theory, various paint applications, pastel and color pencil.

Grading
Grading is cumulative for the entire semester.  Please use the IC Parent Portal to check grades on a regular basis.
PROGRESS MONITORING:
•    Grades in Infinite Campus will be updated once a week.
•    Every 3 weeks prog/elig grades will be used to help identifying struggling students for interventions including tutoring.
•    Every week, IC Messenger will send notices regarding failing assignments.  These are notices of assignments that earned a failing grade (less than 59%).  To verify a student’s class grade, you will need to check IC in more detail.  Please keep in mind the grading policies as stated in the syllabus above.  IC Messenger will also send out a message if the student has missed an assignment.  Failing grades will be sent once per week, missing grades may be sent multiple times over a nine-week period.

Written work and class participation/preparation as well as projects are important components of this class.  Writing skills are integrated into the class through reviews, essays and quizzes. It is recommended that you keep ALL graded work until the semester is over and you have received your final grade.   Participation points are awarded each quarter and include attendance, attitude, studio responsibility, on-task behaviors, and critique skills.

Late or incomplete work
Students are expected to complete ALL assignments on time.
Late work is penalized 10% per school day. Students with excused absences will be allowed 2 days per day absent to complete work before penalties are applied.  It is always better to turn in work late than not at all, however work submitted more than five days late is accepted at the discretion of the teacher and must be of high quality to receive any credit. Those who habitually turn in work late will lose participation points.  No late work is accepted the last week of the quarter.

Make up work from extended unexcused absences, (such as travel) is accepted at the discretion of the instructor.  If you know you will be missing school, you must make arrangements with the teacher before the absence begins.

Rules and Expectations
Attitude, Drive and Effort.  Students are expected to maintain an open mind toward trying new     techniques and be receptive to learning about all areas of art.  It takes patience, perseverance and positive attitude to develop skill in any art form.    Students who practice drawing and painting exercises    outside of class will see greater improvement in techniques.
Please care for our studio space, equipment and supplies in a cooperative and responsible manner.  Clean up and replacement of tools is everyone’s responsibility.
NO FOOD   (except bottled water) is allowed in the VA studios.
Focus for the full period is the only way to get quality work completed.  Excessive noise or horseplay will not be tolerated.
Respect for the instructor, peers and the artwork of others is required.  No negative comments!
The sketchbook is required in class every day.
