SYLLABUS

Art History and Art Appreciation
Students will view a variety of art through PowerPoint presentations, art books, slides and films with a focus on building art vocabulary and knowledge.   Class discussions and written gallery reviews will help students identify and describe various genres, media and styles of art.   Emphasis is on thematic units featuring western and non-western art rather than chronological history.  General exposure to major periods and styles will help students understand the cyclical nature of “styles” in the larger context of world art.

3D Focus
Students will focus on fundamental art concepts and develop essential skills necessary for working with 3 dimensional mediums with practice in the following areas:

•    Identification, exploration and application of art elements and principles in sculpture, ceramics and jewelry
•    Creation of ceramic works using coil, pinch, slab, and slump techniques
•    Operating a potter’s wheel, centering clay and pulling clay into a cylinder
•    Exploring and utilizing different surface treatments for 3 dimensional work
•    Designing and constructing a wearable art piece in metal
•    Creating a sculpture using recycled and/or found objects
•    Researching artistic traditions of various North American and European cultural groups.

Activities and Assignments

•  Weekly sketchbook assignments, submitted on Mondays
•  Two Art Gallery Reviews are required, one per quarter
•  Mandatory attendance at both VA quarter art exhibitions
•  Class critiques
•  Lecture and class discussion
•  Small Group Projects
•  Individual art projects (3 – 14 days)
•  Quizzes and Tests

Grading
Grading is cumulative for the entire semester.  Written work, sketchbook assignments and class participation are weighted equally with art projects.  Reading and writing skills are integrated into our study -- students are required to submit corrections when needed to written assignments.
    •  Most weekly assignments are worth 10 points.  Large projects are worth 15 points.
    •  Late work is penalized 10% per school day.  Projects not completed for critique will be penalized another 10%.   No late work will be accepted the last week of the quarter.  Students must complete ALL assignments.  Students who have excused absences will be given 2 days per day absent to complete work as per school policy.
Incomplete work may not be shown at a critique, but should be completed as soon as possible to receive maximum credit.  Participation points (25) will be given at the end of each quarter and include attendance, focus, cooperation, studio responsibility and attitude.

PROGRESS MONITORING:
•    Grades in Infinite Campus will be updated once a week.
•    Every 3 weeks prog/elig grades will be used to help identifying struggling students for interventions including tutoring.
•    Every week, IC Messenger will send notices regarding failing assignments.  These are notices of assignments that earned a failing grade (less than 59%).  To verify a student’s class grade, you will need to check IC in more detail.  Please keep in mind the grading policies as stated in the syllabus above.  IC Messenger will also send out a message if the student has missed an assignment.  Failing grades will be sent once per week, missing grades may be sent multiple times over a nine-week period.

Behavior Expectations and Class Rules
The sketchbook and toolbox are required in class every day.  Students must retain ALL art projects until the end of the year in their portfolios for review at the Re-audition Interview.

•    Focus on projects for the entire class period.
•    Be open to trying new techniques, receptive to learning about all areas of art and maintain a positive, inquisitive attitude.
•    Critique participation is an important part of the art school process; students will be trained in correct critique protocol so they can fully participate by offering constructive feedback to their peers.
•    Care for the studio space, equipment, tools and supplies which includes cleaning and returning all tools and personal items to correct storage areas.
•    NO FOOD, except water bottles with screw tops, is allowed in the VA classrooms.
•    Students are not allowed in the Storeroom, Bookroom or behind teacher desks without teacher permission.
•    Respectful behavior toward the instructor, peers and the artwork of others
•    School policy requires a teacher to be present if students are in the studio.  Check with teachers for availability of the studio during free periods, lunch and after school.
•    Use of personal headphones is discouraged and allowed only with DAILY permission of the instructor.  Cell phones are never permitted in the classroom and will be confiscated if seen or heard during class.
