Topic:  Music of the Late Romantics and Impressionism

 

There are four components to the student's grade:

 

1.  Detailed notes from the class will be handed in at the end of the rotation. (40 points)

2.  The student will take an open-note quiz on the last day of the rotation. (40 points)

3.  The student will submit a formal term paper.  (100 points)

4.  The student will participate positively in the classroom experience. (5 points per meeting, except on test day)

Term Paper for HS Theory, Late Romanticism and Impressionism

 

The course topics will include the lives and music of:

Mikhail Glinka and The Mighty Five, which include Mussorgsky, Balakirev, Cui, Borodin, and Rimsky-Korsakov

Sergei Rachmainonff

Richard Strauss and Gustav Mahler

 

There will be a lecture class each day with musical examples presented as time allows.  The student is advised to take detailed notes.  In case of absence, the student is responsible for the notes he/she missed that day.  The final test is open-note, and the student is expected to organize the material in paragraph form with attention paid to details like spelling, grammar and usage, logic, and effective organization.
