Welcome to 2007-2008 Creative Writing!
The seven senior seminar students
have sent their books to the printer! They will be wonderful. The
chapbook publication party and reading is May 7, 6:00 p.m. at the
Divine Science Church. The church has a dining room we may use. We plan to have the chapbook signing and purchase, from 6 - 7, then the reading from 7 - 8, and refreshments to end the evening. Please bring something to munch or drink to share.
Senior Creative Writing projects will be
presented on May 14 at 7:00 p.m.in the CW room, the hall outside the room, and in the Schomp Theater. Any creative writing senior is eligible to perform or present a senior project, which must involve another art form. This event is always a delightful and innovative variety of things, so please plan to attend.
Creative Writing majors, all levels, started the last nine weeks of the year (how did this happen so quickly?) with the common fourth nine weeks assignments of a poem about someone no longer living, who they never knew but admire, the last on this year's love theme. The final short story of the year is a monologue. The final poems, due April 4, should be in the display case by April 11, where they'll be on display until the end of the year. The story's due toward the end of the nine weeks, different dates in May depending on the class. Beyond these assignments, advanced writers have all started work on their individualized contracts, and first year writers are beginning a variety of dramatic writing assignments for the final weeks.
First year students finish putting together their picture books and covers by mid-April and in May will go to the elementary school to present these to the kindergarten students.
The Writing Club, which meets Tuesdays 2:45 - 3:45, has completed its work on the DSA literary magazine, Calling Upon Calliope, which will be printed by late April or early May. Writing Club has two more meetings left, April 15 and 22, and on April 22 will have their year-end dinner out. We don't meet in May due to all the senior events and final exams.
After School Writing, available to any creative writing student, continues to be on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2: 45 to 4:30. Night lab, as we call it, is for those who need to work on their creative writing assignments only. Most evenings, those actually writing are few and done by 4:30 or before. Once Writing Club and Philosophy Club are done at the end of April, night lab will be by prior request only. The creative writing room does not stay open for computer games and other such activities.
Philosophy Club continues to meet Thursday nights, 2:45 - 3:45, and argues serious issues tirelessly. Drop ins are welcome. Last meeting will be April 24 for the year.
FINALLY, we heard from BALARAT and our much beloved traditional trip is happening April 28-29. That's a Monday and Tuesday and we'll leave from school early Monday morning, returning to school Tuesday in time for the end of classes. The Balarat information went home Tuesday, April1 and must be returned by Monday, April 7.
A parent
committee met to explore using Clubco as a fundraiser, but nothing further has developed. We will form a fundraising committee next fall. We have other parent help opportunities, so let me know if you'd like to volunteer. Contact Pat Dubrava
Elective middle school creative writing students are also doing dramatic writng for the last nine weeks of the year, as well as a three-character story due at the end of the nine weeks. Using the interviews with parents and grandparents they did first semester, they are writing a monologue from a grandparent and some short dialogues.
The Creative Writing Class of 2008 is here! Look for the link to their photos and writing at the bottom of this page.
Patricia Dubrava teaches advanced, senior seminar, first years and minors and Sara Finnegan-Doyon teaches advanced and minors.
The Creative Writing program at Denver School of the Arts accomodates 6-12th grade student writers, chosen through an audition process. The department is designed for young people with a passion for Creative Writing. Students work to further their education and deepen their knowledge of themselves on paper.
An after school Writing Club sponsors "Calling Upon Calliope," a literary magazine of writing and visual arts from students at DSA and alumni. Writing Club members design, help to select work and produce the magazine.
Creative Writing is proud to keep in touch with its graduates. They attend fine schools throughout the United States from St. John's college to Annapolis, NYU and Oberlin. Some travel the world while others have become models, teachers, thespians and law students. The Creative Writing program builds a community of writers. They enhance the sense of language and the magic of words in each other. These connections remain well after graduation.
