Course Descriptions:

6th-8th Grade Science: These courses teach in the areas of life science, earth science and physical science. Students will produce one major project for each grading period.

Advanced Placement Biology: This is an extensive, in depth study of molecules and cells, heredity and evolution, organism and population ecology, biological classification and anatomy and physiology. Purchase of a lab book required. Testing is multiple choice and written essay as is the AP exam. Students who score 3 or higher on exam are eligible for college credit.

Biology X: This course studies the same biological concepts as Biology but with additional emphasis and research on biological topics.

Physics X: This course emphasizes the basic concepts of classical and modern physics and math solutions to problems with a historical approach. Experiments, demonstrations and computer simulations will be utilized. A project/report is required each quarter. Lab participation and a graphing paper lab notebook are required. Some trigonometry is taught in class.

Advanced Placement Physics: (not offered in 2006-07) This course teaches classical and modern physics including Newtonian mechanics, kinetic gas theory, thermodynamics, fluids, electricity, magnetism, waves and optics and modern physics. Good algebra skills are required; trigonometry is taught in conjunction with the class as needed. Emphasis is on problem solving, understanding concepts and reasoning. Creative solutions to problems are stressed as opposed to memorization. Exams are similar to AP exams.

Zoology: (not offered in 2006-07) This course studies unicellular and multicellular animals, reproductive techniques, needs of each organism and futuristic concerns for species.

Astronomy: This one semester course explores the motions, origin, evolution and how and what scientists know about stars and galaxies. Class activities include locating constellations, constructing a star map and astronomical instruments, plotting celestial motions and preparing research projects.  Prerequisites: Algebra I or Integrated II; students who received a "C" or above in previous science courses are likely to do well in this course.

Chemistry: This two semester course emphasizes theory and the practical application of chemical concepts concerning the structure, properties, composition and changes of matter.

Chemistry 1x, 2x: This course concentrates in the study of chemical and physical changes of mattter. Areas of study include: Quantum mechanics, stoichiometry, thermochemistry, equilibrium, and solutions. Prerequisites: One full year of Algebra or IMP math.

AP Chemistry: This course emphasizes theory and the mathematical application of chemical concepts concerning the structure, properties, composition and changes of matter. Advanced Placement Chemistry: This class is equivalent to the first year of college chemistry. Topics covered are equilibrium, kinetics, thermodynamics and quantitative analysis. The class is designed to prepare for the AP chemistry exam which is required. Prerequisites: completed or enrolled in trigonometry/pre-calculus and success in one year of college prep school science.

Anatomy and Physiology: This course provides an indepth study of the human body; its anatomical design, chemistry, development, disease, heredity and how all function together.
