DSA Clubs and Activities Listings 2023-2024

Introduction

Welcome back students, staff and parents for the 2023-2024 school year. In maintaining social emotional support  for students at DSA we are offering clubs and activities for students. Students interested in starting a club will need to take the following steps to start a club or activity.

  1. Find a sponsor for your club or activity. It must be a DSA teacher or team member please.
  2. Decide on the name and purpose of your club or activity.
  3. Determine the meeting place and time for your club or activity.
  4. When all information is gathered please email information to Ms. Hamilton for approval at syeta_hamilton@dpsk12.net
  5. When your club is approved Mrs. Hamilton will email you a New Club/Renewal registration form online. 

For questions or more information about the registration process please contact Mrs. Hamilton at syeta_lightfoot@dpsk12.net

Club registration will close on October 30, 2023 and begin again January 15, 2024 and close on April 12, 2024.

Club Descriptions

AAPI:

The purpose of this club will be to teach students of all ethnicities about all kinds of Asian Culture and celebrate students of AAPI heritage during their time at DSA. 

Artist Who Code:

Artist Who Code is a club designated for all artists who are interested in computer coding: websites,apps, visual art programs, and any other endeavors which require coding. Our goal is to create a community of artists who learn coding skills to employ in all of their artistic and other endeavors. Where the Arts and Tech meet.Websites,Apps,Programs Let’s code.

Black History Month Creative Project: 

This project has been a DSA tradition where students come together and create a show that honors some aspects of African American History. During Black History Month in February, the student-led performance is presented to the DSA community. Any student can audition to be part of the cast after the student leaders have a rough ideal of the goals of the year’s show. Students work hard to include anyone who shows interest and consistent attendance to rehearsals. 

Black Student Alliance:

Black Student Alliance’s purpose is to provide an outlet and safe space for African American students to learn about their history and cultures. Club activities will be decided by the club members.

Board/Card games Club:

We play popular games such as MTG. Come and join our club for fun and excitement. We always have room for new players.

Cat Club:

Our club purpose is to help cats in adoption centers. We will volunteer, do fundraising, and visit places with cats! When we aren’t doing big events like this, we’ll be planning our next adventure, doing cat crafts, or spreading the word with posters and fundraising! To fundraise we can sell things like baked goods or lemonade. So, The purpose of this club is to help and spread the joy of cats.

Chemistry Olympiad Club: 

The U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad (USNCO) program is a chemistry competition for high school students. The purpose of the competition is to stimulate young people to achieve excellence in Chemistry. The American Chemical Society has sponsored the program since 1984. The goal of this club is to learn chemistry and perform fun experiments.

Christian Club:

For students who are Christian (any denomination) or even just curious, DSA’s Christian Club provides a place to learn and grow in your faith while in fellowship with other artists.

Climbing Club:

Climbing club is a club where we come together and climb. Our goal is to form a community of climbers who are any level and want to have a good time. We will teach anyone who is interested in climbing and get them in for free. This club is also highly centered around physical fitness as it is very important to keep good shape, so we will run and do other activities not only centered around climbing but overall fitness.

Creative Writing Community Outreach:

DSA Astronomy Club:

Getting the chance to teach others about the wonders of Astronomy and STEAM. Get the chance to work with CU Stars, as well as the denver astronomical society and DU’s chamberlin observatory. Getting the chance to do research projects and work with professionals in the field. I would also like to see us work with younger children, encouraging them to engage in STEAM.

DSA Chess Club: 

This club is for everyone for beginners (even if you have never played) all the way up to chess grandmasters. No need to bring anything except the desire to play and learn. Did you know that chess is classified as a sport by the international Olympic committee. Join DSA only sports team on Wednesdays 3:00-4:00pm 

DSA Nerds Club: 

“By nerds for nerds”- is a club that gives students a chance to come together and play Dungeons and Dragons in the various adventuring groups we have available. We meet on Thursdays from 3:15-5:15 after school in room 133. 

DSA Sources of Strength: 

Sources of Strength is a student & staff-led organization that works to lead and launch school-wide campaigns that promote a positive school culture and works to help DSA students cope with difficulties caused by stress anxiety & depression. This program empowers students to create a school environment of support and positivity through the mantra of “hope,help,strength” that provides healthy and constructive ways for students to avoid such feelings. 9th-12th grades are nominated by teachers,counselors and administrators to serve in this group. 

DSA’s Youth For Christ (DYFC):

In the DYFC we talk about and share God’s love. Some of our club activities include reading the bible, watching videos/movies, doing crafts/activities, and organizing service projects that will encourage students to get involved with different communities. We’re hoping that all students will feel welcome and encouraged to join this club.

Eastern European Music Club:

Eastern European Music Club:

This club will discuss the music of Eastern European composers, including Shostakovich and Bartok.

Food System Justice Club:

In the food system justice club, we will learn about the faults of today’s food system and explore solutions through discussion, research, and finally taking action! We will meet in room 232 at lunch on fridays! We will have snacks and a lot of fun! 

Formula 1 Club: In the Formula 1 club we will learn and talk about the physics, engineering, math, economics, politics, history, regulation, rules, and strategy of F1, while also making it a space to talk about current races and events.Additionally, we want to be an educational resource for those looking to learn about the world of motorsport.

French Club:

We are starting a French club for the students of DSA. In the French club we will learn about French culture including food and customs.

Gender & Sexuality Alliance (GSA): 

identity and expression, and work to end hDSA Gender and Sexuality Alliance (GSA) is a student-run club, which provides a safe place for students to meet, support each other and talk about issues related to sexual orientation and gender homophobia and transphobia. 

Girls UP @ DSA:

We’re a Girl Up Chapter that focuses on activism, advocacy, and fundraising. We will work to empower the girls and women both in and outside of our community. Depending on member interest, we will focus on a specific goal to strive towards this year. We will have two required meetings per month, and the others will be optional workshop days. Thanks for your interest, and we hope to see you there!

Jewish Club: 

Welcome to Jewish Club, one of the most inviting clubs you will ever attend. You need not be Jewish to attend this incredibly inclusive endeavor. Jewish Club is for anyone who has found themselves interested in learning a bit about Judaism. The club delves into a little bit of everything- the background on the holidays, the significance of major historic events and the controversy surrounding geography are just a few routinely covered in Club-by providing a variety of perspectives and ideals. Students can listen,ask questions, and engage in an incredibly welcoming and accepting environment.

Math Club (MU ALPHA THETA) : 

The DSA Math Club offers math tutoring to students. Students will be able to get assistance with math homework or students just trying to build a foundation with math skills. Students that need help building a math foundation or in a specific study of math, will come weekly for tutoring.

Men’s Mental Health Club:
Club Purpose: Our aim is to create a supportive space for learning to regulate
emotions and becoming better role models within the DSA community. During
our club meetings, we plan to engage in meaningful discussions about emotional
regulation and expression. We also intend to occasionally bring in guest
speakers who can provide valuable insights into the journey of becoming better
men through emotional strength.

Mindfulness Club:

Are you interested in taking a break from your high stress school day? Do you want to be more intentional with your mindset? Whether you are experienced in mindfulness or are brand new and want to learn more, DSA mindfulness could be perfect for you! Mindfulness club is a great way to manage stress, create balance, and learn strategies that will improve your overall happiness. 

Model UN Wants You!:

The purpose of this club is to practice and attend MUN conferences!

MS Comic Book: 

Comic Book Club meets on Wednesdays from 3:00-4:00pm to discuss shared readings of comic books. We also analyze characters and collaborate on the creations of our own comics. 

Mutual Aid Club:

Mutual Aid Club will be a student run club based on the general idea of mutual aid. This club’s purpose will be to inform students (others) on the acts of mutually providing for vulnerable members of the community. 

National Honor Society of Dance Arts:

The purpose of this club is to cultivate leadership in the students within the Dance department.

Red Cross Club:

With the support of the American Red Cross Mile High Chapter, we strive to pass along skills, knowledge, and information to the students of Denver School of the Arts so they can learn to contribute and improve their community. The Red Cross Club of Denver School of the Arts helps students embody the seven fundamental principles: Humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, volunteer service, unity, and universality in order to educate the Denver community in skills necessary to prepare for, prevent, and respond to disasters.

Running Club:

This club aims to show the importance of outdoor activity and the magic of running. Additionally, it allows students to reduce school stress while enjoying the good weather. The club will be open for all types of runners, even if they are just starting out! Requires: Sneakers or running shoes, water bottle, and somewhat athletic clothing.

Speech and Debate Club: 

DSA’s Speech and Debate Club offers participants the chance to compete in a variety of speech and debate events. At DSA, we pride ourselves upon our strength in both debate events -which focus on argument -and speech events -which focus on performance. Our club pushes those who participate to achieve excellence in the field that they choose and creates experiences and skills that can be used in both high school and future endeavors.

Spelling Bee: 

Student Council: 

This after school club provides middle students an opportunity to learn definitions and spellings of hundreds of new words. Students who participate will be eligible to compete for a spot on the district spelling team and will have the opportunity to compete for a spot on the state spelling team. 

Students Demand Actions DSA:

Students Demand Action is a national grassroots volunteer initiative, created by and for teens and young adults. A network within everytown for gun safety, to channel the energy and passion of high school and college-aged students into the fight against gun violence.

Tri-M Music Honor Society: 

Music honor society is an honor society for music students and students interested in performing and teaching music. We meet Thrusdays at lunch as determined by our officers. 

Women in Literature:

Women in literature is a book based club where participants read books written by women.
