Admissions

Admissions Information for the 2022/23 School Year

Thank you for your interest in applying to
Denver School of the Arts!

Students seeking a chance to be a part of our nationally recognized school should review the general information on this page regarding our admissions process. For more detailed information about the specific audition requirements for each major, please use the links on the bottom of this page. We look forward to meeting you at your audition!

Unfortunately, we are not hosting “shadow” or preview days this school year, due to continuing health & safety guidelines. Check back here soon for a video tour of our building and classrooms.

Step 1
Complete the online application
Step 2
Attend or watch the pre-audition meeting
Step 3
Complete the DPS School Choice form
Step 4
Complete all audition components

Step 1: THE ONLINE APPLICATION

The online application will be open November 1, 2021 through January 1, 2022 at 5:00pm. A link to access it will be located on this page beginning November 1, 2021. You may complete the online application at any point during this window of time. We will not take any late applicants, so please ensure you have completed this step no later than 5pm on January 1, 2022.

This online application will ask for basic information about your child: name, current grade, address, parent/guardian name. If your child is a current DPS student, it will ask for their 6 digit ID. No other preparation or materials are needed to fill out this online application and it will only take two to three minutes to complete.

Please make sure that you complete the entire online application. You will be prompted to first create an account. As soon as you create an account, you will proceed to the next step by adding your child’s name, grade, desired major. You will receive an automated email confirmation that you applied. This automated email from the online application system will contain your student’s name, grade and major. This is your confirmation that we have the application.

If you would like support in completing the online application, or do not have access to a computer/internet, you may come to DSA during the online application window and we will work with you. You are welcome to call the school to make sure your application was received online.

Students may apply and audition for one major only.

Note – Stagecraft and Design will only be accepting applicants for grades 9 through 12.

Once you’ve applied, the school will not call to confirm. Please use the email confirmation, as explained above, as your confirmation. Only completed audition applications will be considered for auditions.

Step 2: THE PRE-AUDITION MEETING

A parent or an adult parent designee for the applicant must be able to attend in person or view their online pre-audition meeting in order to move forward in the audition process. We allow another adult to attend the pre-audition meeting in the place of the parent in case of emergencies/vacations/work/illness/etc. But an adult must either attend the pre-audition meeting (if hosted in person), attend the online meeting, OR watch a recording of the pre-audition meeting to represent the student and get the audition information and an audition time at the end of the meeting. The student applicant does not have to attend/watch the meeting, but they are encouraged to do so.

Each major will explain, in detail, the audition process and requirements for their department. This meeting will be your chance to ask questions specific to your major, outside school commitments, and rehearsal schedules, among other things.

At the end of this meeting, your child will be given an audition date/time for January. Audition dates are predetermined by the school; families do not select the audition date. Audition dates for each major are listed on each major’s admissions page under “audition information.”

You do NOT need to sign up for this meeting because your online application (step 1) is your signup. You simply log into your meeting at the designated pre-audition meeting date.

Neither DPS Office of Choice and Enrollment Services, nor the DSA front office staff run the auditions. Please do not call them with your questions about auditioning for DSA. All audition questions will be answered at the pre-audition meetings by the major teachers.

Step 3: THE DPS SCHOOLCHOICE APPLICATION

Applicants to DSA are still required to participate in the DPS SchoolChoice process. The window to complete this part of the application is January 14, 2022 to February 15, 2022 at 4:00pm.

Go to https://schoolchoice.dpsk12.org to log in or to create an account. The DPS SchoolChoice form will ask you to rank your top 12 preferred schools within DPS, including charter schools and magnet programs such as DSA. When completing this form, please make sure to mark Denver School of the Arts as your 1st choice. The only students who will be enrolled at DSA will be those who are determined to be eligible after their DSA audition (step 4) AND selected DSA as their 1st choice on the DPS SchoolChoice form (step 3).

If you are a current DPS family and have a Parent Portal account, you will use this login to apply for SchoolChoice online from January 14, 2022 – February 15, 2022. To create a Parent Portal account, go to https://myportal.dpsk12.org/ and click Create an Account, or if necessary, you can retrieve/reset your password so you are ready to participate in Choice. It does not matter when during the Choice window you apply, so long as it is submitted by February 15, 2022 at 4:00pm.

If you are an out-of-district family, go to http://schoolchoice.dpsk12.org/ and create an account. Be sure you get confirmation of your application which is in the form of an email and/or text, whichever you select.

If you do not select DSA as your 1st choice school, please know that it is possible that your child may get their MORE preferred choice and not be assigned to DSA. You do not have to list all 12 schools, and if you are from outside of Denver County and only interested in DSA, then just list that one.

You can contact DPS SchoolChoice at 720-423-3493 or schoolchoice@dpsk12.org if you have any questions about this specific portion of the application process.

Step 4: THE AUDITION

Some will be virtual, some will be live…. Each department will explain their audition process at their pre-audition meeting and more information is included below, by department.

Audition Feedback
Due to the large number of applicants and students who go through the audition process, we do not offer written or verbal feedback.

Notification Process
All students who audition will be notified by email on February 9, 2022 about the outcome of their audition (either accepted, waitlisted, or not accepted). If you are accepted and have selected DSA as your 1st choice on the DPS SchoolChoice form, you will have a seat at DSA next school year. If you are waitlisted, we will contact you if openings become available. Please note: this may not be until the start of the 2022 school year. If you are not accepted, we thank you for taking the time to audition, but we will not be able to offer you a seat at DSA for the next school year.

DPS Office and Choice and Enrollment Services will notify all students of their 2022/2023 school assignment through the DPS online system (email and/or text) in late March 2022.

After our first round of auditions/acceptances are complete, we will post information here about any (if needed) 2nd round auditions, which will take place in March 2022. Please note: not all majors will need to conduct 2nd round auditions.

If you have general questions (after reading through all of the information on this page and linked under the specific major you are interested in), you may email Assistant Principal Anna Conley.
Questions specific to the major and its audition process will be addressed at the pre-audition meetings.

All information is subject to change. Please visit this site regularly for updates.
