Visual Arts Call Back Information

Due to the large number of applicants who complete the audition process, we do not offer written or verbal feedback.

Dear Families of Visual Arts Applicants-

We are thrilled that you have applied to Denver School of the Arts and thank you for going through the audition process for the Visual Arts Department. It is inspiring to see so much wonderful art work and see what a crucial role visual arts plays in your lives. If you aren’t given an interview slot this year – as disappointing as we know that is – please don’t take it as a sign that you aren’t a talented artist; we simply have limited capacity to take as many students as deserve a spot in our program.

The list below contains the students we would like to interview, identified by first/last initials and audition number. The student initials and number must both match.

If your audition number does not appear on the list below, please be aware you will not be able to move on to the next step of the audition; furthermore, we cannot offer you a spot in Visual Arts next year.

For those students listed below, interviews will be held via Google Meet at the link provided on Saturday, January 25. Please join the Google Meet call one or two minutes ahead of your scheduled time, and we will admit you from the virtual waiting room. You do not need to prepare anything for the interview, and the interview will take about 8 minutes. Due to the complexities of scheduling, we will not be able to grant alternative interview times. If you miss your audition time you will forfeit your audition (this is due to the number of applicants and tight audition timeline).

You may have to copy and paste the link for the Google Meet in your browser.

Call back post will look like this for Jim Cliff who has audition number 196 — JC196

Department Information

Add department info here…

We are a 6-12 Visual Art program.  This includes all things art, painting, drawing, printmaking, illustration, some basic digital work, sculpture, ceramics, textile, etc.

Middle School 6-8 grade focuses on foundation skills, things like observational drawing, value, color theory, principles of design.  In addition to skills and techniques here we try to give middle school students a wide range of materials to experiment with and at least try them out.  Students must be willing to try all media, not just one they like to work in.

High school students focus on more concept driven work and developing their artists’ voices.

10th grade is our Pre AP year where students work on developing small series of work that are based on an investigation in each portfolio (2D, Drawing and 3D).  11th and 12th grade are both year long investigations to develop and submit a portfolio to AP College Board (one each year).

Senior year is also complete with a senior show of each portfolio and a senior defense to explain and defend the body of work similar to a thesis show. It is a rigid schedule to complete 12-15 high quality pieces for this investigation along with documenting the process and written evidence.

As for the audition process there is a meeting in the fall that will explain everything along with an audition page on the school website.  Things have changed a lot over the years.  Not just in the program but with the audition process and there’s a lot of misleading info out there about what it looks like from people that auditioned a long time ago or had students try out previously.

We supply a link once you are registered to audition for DSA.  It’s a google form asking for the student info and to upload 10 images.  The portfolio must have the following to be complete.

3 images of observational drawing

3 examples of creativity

4 images of any art to show us who you are as an artist (all art must be original).

We also ask for 2 teacher references that are also a google form that the student has to send to whomever they select.

The audition process is the same for middle school and high school and is completely online.  Students must be able to come in at the level of current DSA students in the grade they are applying for as we will not go back and get them caught up from foundation skills.

The portfolio must be complete and follow the instruction in order to be considered as we had 250 applicants for the visual art department alone last year.
